The 30 March 1967 Sgt. Pepper photo session with Michael Cooper also produced the back cover and the inside gatefold images.

McCartney later explained they were consciously trying to express love through their eyes in the portrait.

The album’s inner sleeve featured artwork by the Dutch design team The Fool that for the first time rejected the standard white paper in favour of an abstract pattern of waves of maroon, red, pink and white.

Included with the album as a bonus gift was a sheet of cardboard cut-outs designed by Peter Blake and Jann Haworth to encourage fans to join the band. The postcard portrait of Sgt. Pepper was based on a statue from Lennon’s house that was used on the front cover.

The album’s lyrics were printed in full on the back cover - the first time this had been done.
